Helicobacter Pylori Infection- What You Wanted to Know

Helicobacter Pylori or H Pylori actually refers to a kind of ‘bacterium’ which may cause stomach diseases to anyone and everyone. Such infection may cause various other diseases as well. Like for instance, inflammation in your stomach, bloating or, gastritis, duodenum, ulcers, nausea, and even heartburn.

According to medical science, H. pylori infection usually occurs when a person swallows unhygienic fluid or food. Hence, the helicobacter pylori infection is very common all over the world. It is reported that the given rate of such infection rises with the age. Hence it usually occurs more often in the aged people.

H. Pylori infection is common in areas where sanitation is completely overlooked and is really poor or the living quarters are found in a bad state. In most cases, such infection doesn’t produce any symptoms. It tends to remain restricted to gastric area and most probably it continues unless and until any kind of specific h pylori treatment is offered.

When we consume food, it travels through a tube (esophagus) which links the throat right to the stomach. After that it enters bigger upper part of stomach. Now a natural acid which assists to break down the food secretes in the stomach.

The lower and the narrower part of your stomach is considered the antrum while the first part of small intestine that lies just beyond stomach is called duodenum. The antrum included in the stomach comes covered with a mucous layer which helps guard from the powerful acid found in the stomach. The problem is the shielding mucous layer often gets affected thereby allowing powerful stomach acid to harm the underlying stomach cells.

It was first known that drugs like aspirin, and ibuprofen and even alcohol can upset protective mucous layers. Again, it was found that smoking, corticosteroids and constant stress can contribute to the disruption of the protective layer in some way injuring the stomach cells. In mid 1980s, some other factors were established which even led to the problem of ulcers and gastritis. Since 1980s, it became evident that h pylori bacteria actually have a key role in causing various diseases.

Certain symptoms are common with people who are diagnosed with helicobacter pylori gastritis. These symptoms include nausea, bloating and also a feeling of anxiety. Individuals can also have certain symptoms which suggest ulcers. The pain or burning sensation found in upper abdomen generally occurs after taking the meals or even during the night and often lasts for about an hour. Such symptoms are momentarily calmed by taking antacids, or certain other medications which can reduce the stomach acidity. Medical practitioners in such cases suggest antibiotic treatment so as to clear the illness while relieving the symptoms.

For h pylori treatment, doctors usually advise the acid minimizing medicines to treat infection with the help of antibiotics. One such antibiotic is bismuth and is sold over the counter in the name of Pepto- Bismol. Bismuth is also available as generic medicine. It is called the bismuth subsalicylate. Moreover, a combination of various antibiotic drugs is used to prevent such h pylori bacteria.

H Pylori Treatment

The insidiously affective Gram - negative bacterium called H Pylori can cause various damages to stomach including inflammation, gastric ulcers, and ulcers of the bleeding type. The helix shaped bacterium of the microaerophillic type bears the unique capacity of making its way and clinging on to the mucous lining of the stomach.

Ranging from stomach ache down to acid reflux and indigestion its symptoms may be multifariously varied including conditions of dyspepsia, bleeding, vomiting, nausea, belching and so on. Overlooking of the initial symptoms may make way for the development of harmful ulcers and stomach cancer. Thus treatment is a dire necessity so that the infectious conditions caused by Helicobacter Pylori may be eradicated. As the bacteria is linked with the development of ulcers of various kinds, so people afflicted with ulcers of various kinds should be administered a treatment of H Pylori.

Preceded by a due diagnosis, the H Pylori treatment regimen includes the following:

  1. The medication continues over a long period of time, extending beyond a fortnight.
  2. PPI or proton pump inhibitor is the complex medication used in respect of healing the tissues damaged.
  3. Medicines such as lasoprazole, pantaprazole, rabeprazole, omeprazole and esomeprazole contain Proton Pump Inhibitor.
  4. In order to counter the risk of failure, two of the aforementioned antibiotics are administered as essential part of Helicobacter Pylori treatment.
  5. As per the latest research combination of three such medicines has been found to be most effective.
  6. Irrespective of the combination administered one needs to go through the entire course for the desired cure.
  7. Sometimes PPI is used along with a combination of amoxicillin and clairithromycin.
  8. A successful therapy in children includes a bismuth based medication.
  9. To counter antibiotic resistance among adults bismuth based medication is used including levofloxacin and bismuth subsalicylate.
  10. Lactobacillus or Bifid bacterium a friendly bacterium responsible for the coagulation of yogurt also eradicates H Pylori bacteria.
  11. Certain alcoholic drinks and beverages including coffee should be avoided while the H Pylori medications are being administered. This will reduce the risk of having flushes and skin eruptions. Enough water should be taken to flush the acidic conditions of stomach.

Among the adverse effects of the Helicobacter Pylori treatment toxicity to bismuth is common. Use of herbs and plant extracts to cure H pylori can come up as possible alternatives to H Pylori treatment. After a series of researches conducted turmeric has been found to be most effective in killing the bacteria followed by a number of others including ginger and cumin. Initial treatment by means of the prescribed regimens plays a significant role in curbing H pylori infection and in turn helps arrest malignant conditions.

Helicobacter Pylori Bacteria and H Pylori Treatment

Do you know that H. pylori infection can increase the possibility of having stomach cancer? Helicobacter pylori is a type of bacteria, which causes duodenal or upper small intestine ulcers and stomach gastric ulcers. Helicobacter pylori bacteria may cause ulcers by developing in the stomach lining, thereby producing inflammation and leading stomach and intestinal lining to be easily damaged by the stomach acid.

It is said that more than one half of the world population have H. Pylori bacterium. However, many people infected with the helicobacter pylori bacteria don’t develop ulcers. Commonly found in the stomach, most H Pylori infected people don’t have visible symptoms. According to medical reports, this infection is capable of creating various digestive problems, including ulcers and stomach cancer. It is still not clear why few people with the bacteria get these conditions while others don’t.

Risks

Helicobacter pylori bacteria spreads due to in-taking contaminated water or food with fecal substance. The bacterium invades protective tissue which lines the stomach. This leads to release of toxins and certain enzymes. These toxins and enzymes can directly or indirectly damage the cells of the duodenum or stomach. On the whole H. pylori cause changes to duodenum and the stomach. As result of all these changes, duodenum and stomach are much more vulnerable to major damage caused from the digestive juices like stomach acid. This causes persistent inflammation in walls of the duodenum and the stomach.

In countries like the United States, helicobacter pylori infection during childhood is not common but it becomes a major concern during the adulthood. On the other hand, in most developing countries, children are diagnosed with the H. Pylori infection before the age of 10.

H. Pylori Treatment

The H. pylori bacteria can be effectively eliminated by antibiotics which are specifically directed to eliminate this bacterium. Two antibiotics are usually suggested by the medical practitioners. This helps to reduce the risk of the antibiotic resistance and treatment failure. But, no single medicine cures the helicobacter pylori bacteria. The entire treatment involves taking several medicines for 7 days to 2 weeks.

Most treatment schedules include a medicine called the proton pump inhibitor. This medicine decreases the production of acid in the stomach. This allows damaged tissues to heal. Some of the common examples of the proton pump inhibitors include omeprazole, lansoprazole, esomeprazole, rabeprazole and pantoprazole.

The best possible H. pylori treatment routine continues to be examined. However, American College of Gastroenterology recommends 4 specific drug regimens which come with a combination of at least 3 medications. Following these regimens can help infected individuals to cure helicobacter pylori bacteria or infection. Keep in mind to make H. Pylori treatment regimen effective. To ensure this, it is significant enough to take the full course of all medicines prescribed.
